3P certification of communication cables is always carried out as a qualification of the full production line including approval of product, production line and quality assurance.
Certification Process
- Send production samples, 25% prepay
- Pre-testing
- Full testing of all parameters
- Factory inspection and evaluation
- Documentation
Pre-testing is included in the 25% prepay. At any point, failing to meet the requirements will result in no extra costs, and new improved cable can be re-sent without additional costs.
Samples to be supplied:
Production samples: 2x min 305m + extra if LSFROH fire retardancy testing is carried out.
If Relex type of boxes, or equivalent, is supplied to the market then the test samples supplied to 3P must be box packed.
Test programme
Electrical performance:
Return loss (RL), attenuation (ATT), near end crosstalk (NEXT), far end crosstalk (FEXT), transverse conversion loss (TCL), transverse conversion transfer loss (TCTL), DC resistance, capacitance, insulation resistance, dielectric strength, coupling attenuation and transfer impedance for screened cables.Material characteristics:
Drawing construction, tensile testing both initial and after ageing, heat shock, shrinkage, cold bend.Safety testing:
Flame retardancy, +LSOH: Smoke density, pH/conductivity +LSFROH: Fire retardancy.SIT simulated installation test
The factory inspection will take place over one or two days, during which we evaluate the QA system:
1) We evaluate the Quality Manual
2) We inspect the production line
3) We evaluate internal test resultsUsually there will be time left over during the inspection to have a discussion of general points, e.g. standardisation, market development, test methods, etc.
Maintenance of Qualification
Two (2) annual follow-up factory inspections will be required each year to maintain a full production line qualification. One (1) production sample of each qualified cable in regular production will be selected during the inspection for testing at 3P. If Relex type of boxes, or equivalent, is supplied to the market then the production samples must be box packed.

Production samples: 5 for each individual circuit design
One “type” of connecting hardware can cover a large number of components with different port numbers, housings, etc. Only if circuit design or connector interfaces are changed the component or circuit in question is considered a new “type” requiring individual qualification.
Assembly instructions must be provided.
